Beware 17th Street - double right turn lane through bike lane creates hazard for cyclists

A cyclist who appeared in ABC's "I'm on that bike" ads, John Tackett, was hit by a car last week (see John's blog for details). But unlike most car/bike crashes, it may be that neither party was to blame. Instead, faulty street design, or rather lack of design, may be the culprit. The Georgia Department of Transportation recently added a 2nd right turn lane onto Spring Street to accommodate car traffic displaced from the 14th Street closure. The bike lane was not completely removed during the process, giving the appearance that it continued between two right turn lanes. ABC and PEDS are working with GDOT to remedy this dangerous situation.
