The Atlanta Bicycle Campaign Pedals into Pride with First Ever Bicycle-Powered Float
Float to Promote Safely Sharing the Road and a 3 Feet Proper Passing Law
ATLANTA – June 24, 2008 – The Atlanta Bicycle Campaign announces that it is designing a bicycle-powered float for the 2008 Atlanta Pride Celebration Parade, a first in Atlanta Pride history. Four experienced cyclists will pull a float sporting a display educating the public on the need for a 3 feet safe passing law, and encouraging drivers and cyclists alike to share the road. The Atlanta Bicycle Campaign’s Share the Road project aims to educate drivers and cyclists on how to share the road legally and safely.
The float aligns with the parade theme “Your Vote, Your Rights, Your Future” and will feature a display demonstrating the importance of cars giving 3 feet when passing cyclists. The float is constructed of plywood, bike wheels and other bicycle parts. Atlanta Bicycle Campaign volunteers supported by Georgia State University sculpting professor Ruth Stanford will construct the float.
“As an Atlanta native I have been supporting the annual Pride celebration for nearly two decades,” said Erica Crabb Moon, Share the Road project coordinator for the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign. “As a friend, supporter and advocate of cyclists and riding, there is a great need in Metro Atlanta to inform motorists and cyclists to Share the Road and the Pride float allows us to do that. The Pride float also allows us to showcase the lean, clean and green benefits of this fun mode of transportation, the bicycle.”
“The Pride Celebration aims to showcase innovative programs and collaborative partnerships that positively impact gay communities in the city of Atlanta,” said Donna Narducci, executive director of the Atlanta Pride Committee. “We are pleased to support the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign in promoting awareness about sharing the road safely and hope to encourage more Atlantans to cycle.”
The 2008 Atlanta Pride Celebration Parade will kick off Sunday, July 6 at 1:00 p.m. at the intersection of 10th and Piedmont. In addition to pulling the float, Atlanta Bicycle Campaign members and volunteers will use bike trailers and racks to illustrate the flexibility of using bikes to commute. The riders will distribute Share the Road giveaways and information.
