Terms of Use
At the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign we advocate for bicycling and rely on the free and open exchange of ideas to advance the causes that we support. Likewise we feel that the contributors to our site should be able to express themselves freely, especially when weighing in on matters that are of importance to our constituency. To this end we strive to have as open a policy as possible with regard to what you can post on our website.
Zero tolerance for haters and spammers
Let's state the restrictions up front. These are the kind of of content that will be removed from the site and may lead to your account being suspended.
- gratuitous insults, pointless rude remarks and mean-spirited personal attacks
- promotion of products and services in support of a commercial interest or enterprise.
Note: recommendations or reviews of products or services for the benefit of the ABC community are entirely acceptable when no compensation - direct or indirect - has been sought or is expected in return.
The kind of users who generate these types of posts are hardly unfamiliar; they are known on the Internet as haters and spammers. Our tolerance for them is limited.
Your rights and responsibilities
That said, you are at liberty to post almost anything else you want, especially on your own blog. Be more guarded in public forums, if you would. We do ask that you try to steer toward ABC-related topics; there are an endless number of other venues for voicing broad political opinions and reviewing the latest films, for example. We will not police what you say, so, remember, your writing is your own responsibility. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has a handy legal guide for bloggers that you may help you better understand related questions.
Keeping other readers in mind
Anyone who has ridden a bicycle any length of time in this city is no stranger to profanity. It should come as no surprise that vigorous expression of opinions here may sometime demand, shall we say, vigorous language.
We do ask that you keep other readers in mind when posting and so we have instituted a tagging system under the heading "Reader advisories" which currently contains the following terms
- adult content
- commercial content
- flame
- harsh language
This list may be expanded in the future.
You are encouraged to tag your contributions accordingly, as a courtesy to others who may not want to read such material. Website editors have the prerogative to add tags to or remove tags from user contributions.
Working with parents
We make no presentation that all the content on our site is "family-friendly". We do, though, think that by utilizing our reader advisory system and employing a system of parental guidance and monitoring, children should be able to visit this site without encountering inappropriate material. We ask for your cooperation in helping our site work effectively with parental control software. Use our contact form for website feedback to let us know what we can do.
