Woodstock Police Department kicks off a Share the Road education program with ABC
On August 26th, the City of Woodstock Police Department (WPD) and the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign launched a Share the Road Education Program in order to educate motorists and cyclists on how to legally and safely share the road.
The program was headed by the Bicycle Unit of the WPD who provided plain-clothes bike officers to ride on the street and give out warnings and information on how to share the road.
For example, drivers were reminded how to safely pass a cyclist on a narrow roadway and how to interact with bicycles as vehicles on the road. Officers also reminded bicyclists to practice smart, safe riding by obeying all of the rules of the road.
"This operation is more than just pulling over drivers, it's about prevention and education," said Chief Rick Moss. According to traffic law in Georgia, bicycles are vehicles and must follow the same traffic laws. With an increase in the number of Woodstock residents cycling to combat high gas prices and for recreation, sharing the road safely is even more important.
WPD is on the forefront of using bicycle police units to prevent crime and have bicycle officers on duty 24 hours a day.
